Tracy is a twenty-something red-headed photographer & designer from Manila, Philippines. She is one of the co-founders of Tender Blender Food Design, and takes pictures of (and designs things for) food for a living, but is open to other freelance work involving a camera.

This blog is a mix of her work and bits of her personal life (though the two often occur simultaneously).

She finds it a bit odd speaking in third person about herself.

It’s back to school for me tomorrow morning, teaching another InDesign class! Being the perpetual 17 year old that I am, I decided to plant myself in a coffee shop to work (read: cram) on stuff for my class.
I had initially planned to just breeze through my stuff for tomorrow, and just edit pictures all afternoon, but fixing the lesson plan and “practicing” my spiel for tomorrow proved to be more time-consuming than I had expected. So my pictures will have to wait! I think my pen tablet cried a little in my laptop bag, since I brought it along but never whipped it out.
I’m a little excited to teach InDesign again, partly because it keeps my brain juice swirling around in my head. I’m a little curious as to what my students are like this term. I’m hoping I get a nice, happy batch of well-behaved college kids, but I don’t know if that’s a tall order.

One of our favorite adobo pictures for Unilever finally came out in the latest issue of Yummy magazine! It’s a little sad, though, that we weren’t able to shoot the rest of the (Knorr) food for this issue. The shoot was cancelled at the last minute, and was moved to another day when we had scheduled a shoot for another client. Ah well. We’re shooting again tomorrow for the next issue! Hopefully it pushes through, as it’s been rescheduled a couple of times already! No worries though. (:

Earlier this week, Karl & I had two consecutive shoots to do. Kiks went out of town on a family vacation for Holy Week, so we were left to try and replicate his magic.
The shoot for Knorr was no biggie — after months of shooting for them, we’ve somehow developed a certain brand of styling the sets for their dishes. Most of the time was spent on talking about life before college. It was a real trip remembering all the crazy things that went down in elementary and high school! I mean, who could forget all the school fairs? And with us coming from neighbor schools (Miriam and Ateneo, of course!), it went without saying that we’d be witness to the same things. The silly fair booths, concerts, the Miriam-Ateneo interaction in second year, we talked up a whirlwind of memories! It was a pretty good afternoon.
The next day, we had a shoot to do in Katipunan. There was an added challenge for us, especially Karl, as the food styling was left to him. It was slightly tense, since the client was hovering over us, but I’d just look through my viewfinder and see the incredibly beautiful diffused lighting brought about by the window’s curtains paired with our reflector and all was well in my head. In the end, we ended up with some pretty good results. I give myself and Karl a pat on the back! Kiks would be proud.
All in all, it was a good two days of work for me & Karl. The good vibes balanced out whatever negative energy there was. There really is nothing like bonding over food, whether eating it, or shooting it.
P.S. Karl’s started a blog not too long ago, do check it out! (:

We discovered early on that we could put our iPod/iPhone in a bowl to work as a speaker when playing music. We’ve been doing it all the time when we have a shoot at Unilever. Nifty little trick, that is! Saves battery life from cranking up the volume, plus the sound is actually much nicer as compared to when you just leave the iPod on the table.

Yesterday, we bought some new equipment! Since we had some downtime again during our shoot today, we decided to try out our new toy. Hello from the Tender Blender team!

Now that these pictures are sitting next to each other on my screen, I find it really weird that I’m holding a glass bowl of candles — absolutely nothing to do with food. HAHAHA! Or you know, we can just say they’re the non-food props, making totally more sense now.

Me from today’s shoot. I don’t really remember why I was making a pouty face.

Instagram-ing level: Tender Blender
(We had some down time during our shoot today, and we were talking about the insane quality of photos on the iPhone 4S, how the quality is almost like that of photos from an SLR, and Instagram. We then had this really silly idea. Hahahahaha! Hello.)

Complete with external flashes, reflectors, etc. HAHAHAHA!

Behind the scenes at GMA

So today, we did some behind the scenes shooting (in some sense, I guess) for work. It was pretty cool being in a huge studio where they do tapings!

An abundance of screens, cameras, lights, cables — I squeeeeed in excitement a little.

It also goes without saying that there was an abundance in people. I was amazed by the rather high level of energy in the studio!

Naturally, it was food-related work. I especially loved the people preparing the food for the audience to taste, they were so funny, always smiling and laughing the whole time! There was a point wherein one of the kitchen staff was stirring a big pot of something steaming, and suddenly started laughing this high-pitched laugh like a witch. Hilarity!

Well, I think that’s about as much as I can share on my personal blog. I barely whip out my camera these days to shoot things other than for work, but this was something different, at least in terms of what Tender Blender’s been doing so far. I’ve done events photography before, but nothing quite like this. I’m glad for this excuse to get my camera out and take photos again, and not in a tiny room at that. ‘Til the next unexpected experience!

Spent the latter part of this day with Tender Blender at GMA during a taping of Kusina Master! Quite the experience to be behind the scenes of shows like that. (:
